Natural Gas Safety Tips
Stay away from your gas meter!
- A bad odor that smells like rotten eggs or a skunk can indicate a gas leak. Leave the area immediately and tell an adult to alert your natural gas company.
- Store combustible and flammable materials away from your gas furnace or water heater.
- Pipes connected to your natural gas furnace or water heater should be free of hanging items.
- Place a carbon monoxide detector near natural gas appliances.
- Don’t wear loose clothing while cooking on a natural gas stove.
- A gas stove’s flames should be blue. If flames are orange or yellow, the stove should be serviced by a qualified technician.
- Turn pot handles inward to prevent spills and burns.
- Damp clothing should not be dried on a gas stove or in a gas oven.
- Never use your gas oven to heat your home.
- Keep flammable items such as dish towels away from the natural gas stovetop.
Keep areas around your water heater clear!
